Semester Program

Since 1998, the Notre Dame Washington Program has been the University's flagship experience for undergraduate students in D.C.. Students become immersed in the political and cultural life of our nation's capital, while interning part-time and taking classes in politics and policy. Students intern in government offices, Congress, non-governmental organizations, the media, and cultural institutions. As part of the Program, students engage in weekly policy visits with offices and institutions across the Capital District. Together with their internship, these networking opportunities provide our students with an unparalleled jumpstart on their career.

Living in D.C. 

Well known for its monuments and architectural marvels, Washington is home to an almost endless array of opportunities for cultural enrichment and appreciation of the arts. Our students enjoy exploring D.C. with museum visits, concerts and theater performances, eating out and more. The Program also offers programming for students to make the most of their time in D.C., including the perennial favorite, a historical walking tour of the monuments with Richard Hyde of Veritas Tours. 

Students live with other ND students in 2 bedroom/2 bath furnished apartments in the Penn Quarter neighborhood. The location is close to public transportation, shopping, internship sites and more. The apartment building has nice amenities including small gym and pool. Roommate requests are accepted. Students cook for themselves and receive a stipend to cover the cost of groceries and meals. Students are discouraged from bringing a car to D.C., as public transportation is readily available.

Internship experience

The internship is the hallmark of the Washington Program experience. Immersed in a dynamic work culture, students develop essential skills and expand their professional network. Being a part of the day-to-day operations of their organization provides real world perspective and discernment.

Washington Program staff and the Center for Career Development work closely with each student to guide them through the internship application process. Each student will be responsible for choosing where to apply for an internship. For over 20 years, students in the Washington Program have interned with a range of offices and organizations including; Capitol Hill, federal offices, lobbying and law firms, think tanks and public interest organizations, consulting companies, media and news organizations.
